22 Nov “Learning” Review 16th November, ArtsDepot, North Finchley by Mel Pretorius
I was lucky enough to attend the world premier of Learning at the ArtsDepot, North Finchley on 16th November.
This deeply personal theatre piece titled Learning is the brainchild of Francesca Rose and Seamus Finnegan. It started life as a series of semi-autobiographical monologues written by Francesca about growing up in the 1960s and 1970s as a traditional but only mildly observant Jew who was nevertheless firmly anchored in a faith community. This has been developed into a full-length play that was first performed on Zoom during lockdown and then as two abridged rehearsed readings. The intimate studio space at the ArtsDepot was the perfect setting for the performances on 16th and 17th November 2024.
Gemma Franco played Debs, one half of the troubled couple who we see at different times in their lives, from young and in love through to later on in life when the subject of religion is a sticking point and they have differing of views of what marriage should be. Gemma not only acted in this production but also composed all the music and took on the role of Company Music Director.
Nick Delvallé is new to the project but took on the role of Jonathan and came across as funny, serious, charming, throughout the play.
The stage is simply set with a piano and two wheely stools as the only main props but they are fully utilised and this means we focus on the actors rather and their captivating words.
A special mention to Sharon Reshef Armony who directed the play admirably, adding in some choreography that broke up the tension and did all the lighting design.
If you get to see a production of Learning in future, do go. It is such a wonderful experience to listen to the dialogue that is funny, moving and thought-provoking.
